Kelston Birdsong features 35 songs of birds that are found at Kelston Roundhill. The way the piece works is that each musician is allocated seven birdsongs. The allocations give the musician the best chance to hear that particular bird. When they hear one of their birds, the musician plays a 'call' from a call-sheet. On hearing the call, the other musicians then play a response. The calls and responses are set within the hearing ranges of the calling musician. This process then repeats until all the birdsongs have been heard. The piece therefore theatricalises the act of listening.
