Engagement

Over more than four decades, I have worked at the intersection of music, technology, disability, research and institutional change. Alongside composition and scholarship, I have contributed to strategy, funding, policy, artistic development and accessibility across universities, cultural organisations, research councils and public bodies.

My engagement falls broadly into three overlapping areas:

• Academic and Research Strategy
• Artistic and Cultural Practice
• Disability, Neurodivergence and Aural Diversity

These strands are not separate from my creative work. Projects such as Frog Fizzles, my research into Aural Diversity, and my ongoing compositional practice are all examples of how artistic systems, lived experience and institutional thinking inform one another.

I have served on major scientific and advisory committees including the European Research Council (SH5), the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (Vice-Chair), national research councils in Austria, Italy and Portugal, and numerous cultural and healthcare boards. I have evaluated thousands of research proposals and advised on institutional strategy, research development and interdisciplinary programme design.

As a founder of multiple degree programmes and research institutes, I have worked at senior level on curriculum innovation, research infrastructure, staff development and cross-disciplinary strategy.

As an autistic person with severe hearing loss and Ménière’s Disease, I have also worked extensively in advocacy and design for invisible disabilities — work that directly informs both my research and creative practice.

I am particularly interested in conversations that connect artistic systems, institutional imagination and lived sensory experience.
