Clarinette Quintette
Notes
This clarinet quintet was inspired by Marcel Duchamp's Large Glass and in particular the 'Litanies of the Chariot'. In the first performance at Keele University, the clarinnetist wore a wedding dress and was seated on a platform above the string quartet, who wore brown suits. This directly echoed the appearance of the Large Glass. In subsequent performances, the short movements of the quintet were accompanied by the images below, drawn by Mark Thomson. The music all derives from the clarinet quintets by Mozart, Weber, Brahms and Reger, which were subjected to various operations suggested by the titles of each movement.
